“A New Beginning”
Shortly after Jesus selects His twelve disciples, the ones through whom He will lead His church after His resurrection and physical departure, He begins to train them.
It is “On The Job” training. Mark chapter 1-4 details the beginning, the calling and the nature of the training. The disciples are hearing and learning from Jesus public teaching, along with the public. Yet, they also have specialized training. Jesus gives them personal time and instruction. We see how Jesus speaks to the crowd and relates differently to His chosen disciples. There is deepening intimacy their personal relationships, especially as they learn of His heavenly identity.
Mark chapter 4 also addresses how some will believe and others will not believe. Through a string parables Jesus explains how He takes root in people, if they are receptive. The end of the chapter displays a “pop quiz” to the disciples to reveal their understanding of and receptivity to His divine identity.
